Old Testament

Psalm 27:1-4

1 The LORD is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life. Of whom shall I be afraid?

3 Though an army should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear. Though war should rise against me, even then I will be confident.

4 One thing I have asked of the LORD, that I will seek after: that I may dwell in the LORD’s house all the days of my life, to see the LORD’s beauty, and to enquire in his temple.

New Testament

2 Corinthians 4:6-7

6 seeing it is God who said, “Light will shine out of darkness,” who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

7 But we have this treasure in clay vessels, that the exceeding greatness of the power may be of God and not from ourselves.

Thought for the Day

Psalm 27 begins with a confession that steadies fear: “The Lord is my light and my salvation.” Light here is not an aesthetic. It is rescue. It is a face turned towards us in the dark.

Paul speaks of the same light, now shining “in the face of Jesus Christ”. The God who once said “Let light shine out of darkness” has shone in our hearts. And yet we carry this treasure in jars of clay. The glory is real, but we are still fragile.

So the light of Christ does not make us proud. It makes us honest. It teaches us that weakness is not disqualification, and that mercy is not a performance. Light exposes, but it also warms. It shows us what must change. It makes room for repentance. It teaches us to stop pretending.

Pray, then, for light in public life: for truth where there is spin, for courage where there is fear, for gentleness where there is contempt. Pray for those in exhausting roles, carrying treasure in clay. And ask the Lord to change you: to make you less defensive, more grateful, more ready to serve. If Christ’s light has shone on us, it must shine through us.
