Old Testament

Isaiah 57:15-19

15 For the high and lofty One who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy, says: “I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also who is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite.

16 For I will not contend forever, neither will I always be angry; for the spirit would faint before me, and the souls whom I have made.

17 I was angry because of the iniquity of his covetousness and struck him. I hid myself and was angry; and he went on backsliding in the way of his heart.

Thought for the Day

Isaiah speaks of the High and Holy One who inhabits eternity, and then says something that should stop us: he dwells with the contrite and lowly, to revive the spirit of the humble. The Lord is not trapped by our hierarchies. He does not avoid the low place.

Mary’s song in Luke is full of this same reversal. The proud are scattered; the mighty brought down; the humble lifted; the hungry filled. God’s mercy does not merely soothe. It rearranges.

If God comes near to the lowly, then the Church cannot remain comfortable with contempt. And public life cannot be judged merely by its efficiency. It must be judged by what it does to the small, the poor, the overlooked. Mercy is a light that shows what we truly love, and what we have ignored. It also gives us courage to change.

So pray for those whose voices are easily dismissed. Pray for leaders to listen without defensiveness. Pray for the Church to be a place where humility is honoured and mercy is practised. And ask the Lord to revive your own spirit: to make you gentle, truthful, and attentive, so that you recognise God where he loves to dwell.
