Old Testament

Isaiah 9:2-7

2 The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. The light has shined on those who lived in the land of the shadow of death.

3 You have multiplied the nation. You have increased their joy. They rejoice before you according to the joy in harvest, as men rejoice when they divide the plunder.

4 For the yoke of his burden, and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, you have broken as in the day of Midian.

6 For a child is born to us. A son is given to us; and the government will be on his shoulders. His name will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

7 Of the increase of his government and of peace there shall be no end, on David’s throne, and on his kingdom, to establish it, and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from that time on, even forever. The zeal of the LORD of Armies will perform this.

Thought for the Day

Isaiah names a child given, a son born, and places government upon his shoulders. His reign will be endless, marked by justice and righteousness. The promise is not that politics will save us, but that God will rule with a kind of authority that does not corrupt.

John begins even further back: in the beginning was the Word. And then he says the astonishing thing: the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. God does not shout from a distance. He comes near enough to be touched, misunderstood, rejected, and received.

This changes how we see power. True authority is not domination. It is self-giving light. It is truth made present. It carries weight without crushing. It is mercy with backbone. It is the glory of God, revealed in a human face.

So pray for leaders and institutions: for authority that serves rather than grasps, for speech that is truthful rather than manipulative, for justice that is not postponed forever. Pray for the Church’s witness to be more like Christ: full of grace and truth, neither harsh nor vague. And ask to welcome the Word as he comes: not only in bright ideas, but in flesh-and-blood neighbours, in the ordinary interruptions of love.

Prayer Points

Respond
  • Lord Jesus, Word made flesh, draw near to us; give the Church courage to bear grace and truth together.
  • Give public leaders authority that serves: just, truthful, and restrained, not self-protective or cruel.
  • Protect those harmed by corrupt power; bring light into hidden places and justice into slow systems.
