The Kingdom’s Eternal Reign

Scripture References

Read First

Old Testament

Daniel 2:44-45

44 “In the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which will never be destroyed, nor will its sovereignty be left to another people; but it will break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it will stand forever.

45 Because you saw that a stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it broke in pieces the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver, and the gold, the great God has made known to the king what will happen hereafter. The dream is certain, and its interpretation sure.”

New Testament

Revelation 11:15-19

15 The seventh angel sounded, and great voices in heaven followed, saying, “The kingdom of the world has become the Kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ. He will reign forever and ever!”

16 The twenty-four elders, who sit on their thrones before God’s throne, fell on their faces and worshipped God,

17 saying: “We give you thanks, Lord God, the Almighty, the one who is and who was, because you have taken your great power and reigned.

18 The nations were angry, and your wrath came, as did the time for the dead to be judged, and to give your bondservants the prophets, their reward, as well as to the saints and those who fear your name, to the small and the great, and to destroy those who destroy the earth.”

19 God’s temple that is in heaven was opened, and the ark of the Lord’s covenant was seen in his temple. Lightnings, sounds, thunders, an earthquake, and great hail followed.

Thought for the Day

Daniel sees empires as something breakable. They look solid while they stand, but history shows how quickly iron becomes rust. Into that fragility God speaks a strange confidence: he will set up a kingdom that shall never be destroyed, a reign not handed from one faction to another, not finally toppled by time.

So we end the year as people who bow. We pray for governments, yes, but we also remember their limits. And we place our hope where it belongs: in Jesus Christ, whose kingdom cannot be bought, bullied, or broken.

In Revelation the song is even bolder: “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ.” Heaven does not celebrate because the world has been mastered by human strength, but because the Lord has taken his rightful rule. The end is worship, judgement, and the settling of what has been crooked.

This is not an excuse for indifference to public life. It is a correction to idolatry. It tells us that no state is ultimate, no office is permanent, no programme is the last word. It frees us to work for the common good without panic, and to speak truth without servility.
