New Testament

Ephesians 5:8-11

8 For you were once darkness, but are now light in the Lord. Walk as children of light,

9 for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth,

10 proving what is well pleasing to the Lord.

11 Have no fellowship with the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but rather even reprove them.

Thought for the Day

Exodus forbids the easy sins of a crowd: do not spread a false report; do not join hands with the wicked to become a violent witness; do not pervert justice for the poor or show favour to the powerful. Truth is not a private possession. It is a public obligation.

Paul tells the Ephesians not to participate in the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather to expose them. That is a costly calling. Darkness is often organised; it has allies and excuses. Light, by contrast, can feel lonely, and truth-telling can be punished.

Courage to speak the truth is not the same as the appetite to accuse. Scripture is allergic to both cowardice and cruelty. It calls us to truthful speech that protects neighbours rather than using them, and to processes that are just rather than theatrical.

Lord, give us clean mouths and steady hearts. Protect whistleblowers and truth-tellers from retaliation, and protect institutions from the slow rot of secrecy. Give wisdom to investigators and journalists, and humility to leaders when correction is needed. And where we have repeated rumours or stayed silent for comfort, bring us to repentance and to brave, gentle honesty. Let light be kinder than darkness, and stronger.
