Old Testament

Deuteronomy 15:7-11

7 If a poor man, one of your brothers, is with you within any of your gates in your land which the LORD your God gives you, you shall not harden your heart, nor shut your hand from your poor brother;

8 but you shall surely open your hand to him, and shall surely lend him sufficient for his need, which he lacks.

9 Beware that there not be a wicked thought in your heart, saying, “The seventh year, the year of release, is at hand,” and your eye be evil against your poor brother and you give him nothing; and he cry to the LORD against you, and it be sin to you.

10 You shall surely give, and your heart shall not be grieved when you give to him, because it is for this thing the LORD your God will bless you in all your work and in all that you put your hand to.

11 For the poor will never cease out of the land. Therefore I command you to surely open your hand to your brother, to your needy, and to your poor, in your land.

New Testament

1 Timothy 6:17-19

17 Charge those who are rich in this present age that they not be arrogant, nor have their hope set on the uncertainty of riches, but on the living God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy;

18 that they do good, that they be rich in good works, that they be ready to distribute, willing to share;

19 laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold of eternal life.

Thought for the Day

Deuteronomy does not treat generosity as an optional extra for the spiritually inclined. Do not harden your heart. Do not shut your hand. Open it wide to your brother, to the needy, to the poor in your land. Israel’s life with God is meant to be visible in what happens when someone falls short, and in how quickly compassion becomes practical.

Paul speaks to those who have prospered. Do not be high-minded. Do not set your hope on the uncertainty of riches, but on the living God who richly provides. And then, almost gently: do good, be rich in good works, generous and ready to share. Wealth is not banned; it is disciplined, redirected toward love.

Success has a way of tightening the fist. It whispers that you earned it alone, that you must protect it at all costs. Scripture tells a truer story: what we have is given, and therefore can be given. We ‘store up treasure’ not by clinging, but by giving, and by building lives that others can safely lean on.

Lord Jesus, loosen our grip. Keep entrepreneurs and leaders from pride, and keep those with little from despair. Teach your Church to rejoice without boasting, to share without patronising, and to build local life that feels, to the vulnerable, like a welcome.
