Trusting God Amid Economic Uncertainty

Scripture References

Read First

Old Testament

Psalm 37:25-26

25 I have been young, and now am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his children begging for bread.

26 All day long he deals graciously, and lends. His offspring is blessed.

New Testament

Philippians 4:6-9

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.

7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

8 Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are honourable, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report: if there is any virtue and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.

9 Do the things which you learnt, received, heard, and saw in me, and the God of peace will be with you.

Thought for the Day

Psalm 37 is written for days when envy feels sensible. Do not fret because of evildoers, it says; trust the Lord and do good; commit your way to him; be still before him and wait. The Psalm does not deny that there are wicked who prosper. It refuses, instead, to let their apparent success set the temperature of our souls. It keeps returning us to time: the wicked flourish ‘for a little while’; the Lord’s goodness endures. Waiting is not laziness; it is faith refusing to be hurried into wrongdoing.

Paul offers a practice for anxious hearts: pray, ask, and give thanks. Not because everything is fine, but because God is near. And the promise is not an explanation but a guard: the peace of God will keep watch over hearts and minds in Christ.

Economic uncertainty presses on the imagination. It makes tomorrow feel like a threat and neighbours feel like competitors. Yet the Kingdom trains us in another posture: steadiness without smugness, generosity without panic, honesty without fear.

Lord Jesus, teach us to be still. Give daily bread to those who are short, and wisdom to those who must make decisions under pressure. Guard our minds from spiralling worry, and make us people who keep doing good while we wait for you.
