Trusting God’s Sovereignty in Governance

Old Testament

Daniel 2:20-22

20 Daniel answered, “Blessed be the name of God forever and ever; for wisdom and might are his.

21 He changes the times and the seasons. He removes kings and sets up kings. He gives wisdom to the wise, and knowledge to those who have understanding.

22 He reveals the deep and secret things. He knows what is in the darkness, and the light dwells with him.

New Testament

Revelation 11:15-18

15 The seventh angel sounded, and great voices in heaven followed, saying, “The kingdom of the world has become the Kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ. He will reign forever and ever!”

16 The twenty-four elders, who sit on their thrones before God’s throne, fell on their faces and worshipped God,

17 saying: “We give you thanks, Lord God, the Almighty, the one who is and who was, because you have taken your great power and reigned.

18 The nations were angry, and your wrath came, as did the time for the dead to be judged, and to give your bondservants the prophets, their reward, as well as to the saints and those who fear your name, to the small and the great, and to destroy those who destroy the earth.”

Thought for the Day

Daniel blesses the name of God because wisdom and power belong to him. He changes times and seasons. He removes kings and sets up kings. This is not political commentary in code; it is worship in exile. Daniel looks at imperial power and refuses to call it ultimate.

Revelation brings that refusal to a climax: "The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ." The world’s rule is not denied; it is re-situated. It is temporary. Christ’s reign is final.

This does not make Christians lazy. It makes us patient. It frees us from panic, from messianic politics, from despair when institutions disappoint. We can work for justice without imagining we are the redeemers. Nor need trust in God’s sovereignty make us retreat into camp-thinking or quietism. Because Christ reigns, we are free to act with moral seriousness, to repent when our own side is wrong, and to seek the common good without pretending any earthly victory is ultimate.

Lord Jesus, reign over our public life. Give rulers humility, and give citizens steadiness. Where governments do good, give thanks. Where they do harm, grant repentance and restraint. Teach us to speak and act with moral seriousness and with hope. And when news unsettles us, return us to worship: that your kingdom will stand, that you see the hidden, and that your judgement will be just. Keep us faithful in our small obedience until the day your reign is openly seen.
