Scripture References

Read First

Old Testament

Isaiah 60:1-3

1 “Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the LORD’s glory has risen on you!

2 For behold, darkness will cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but the LORD will arise on you, and his glory shall be seen on you.

3 Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising.

New Testament

Philippians 2:14-16

14 Do all things without complaining and arguing,

15 that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without defect in the middle of a crooked and perverse generation, amongst whom you are seen as lights in the world,

16 holding up the word of life, that I may have something to boast in the day of Christ that I didn’t run in vain nor labour in vain.

Thought for the Day

Isaiah does not tell a weary people to manufacture brightness. He tells them to rise because light has come: the glory of the Lord has dawned. Public witness begins there. It is not self-promotion. It is reflection.

Paul, writing to the Philippians, speaks in the same key of quiet radiance. Do what you do without gongusmos and quarrelling. Hold fast the word of life. Shine, he says, like stars against a dark sky. There is a kind of holiness that does not shout, yet cannot quite be hidden.

The Church’s public life is often tested not by headline moments but by tone: whether we are truthful without being vicious, patient without being passive, courageous without being contemptuous. Grumbling can feel like realism, but it corrodes the soul. Joy can feel naive, but it is sometimes the most serious thing.

Lord, make your people luminous. Give us the steadiness of those who know we belong to you, and therefore do not need to win every argument. Help us to serve our neighbours in public life with clean hands and clear speech. And let our light be mercy-shaped: so that when others look toward the Church, they glimpse something of your kindness, your justice, and your peace.
