Resilience Through Play

Scripture References

Old Testament

Joshua 1:6-9

6 “Be strong and courageous; for you shall cause this people to inherit the land which I swore to their fathers to give them.

7 Only be strong and very courageous. Be careful to observe to do according to all the law which Moses my servant commanded you. Don’t turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success wherever you go.

8 This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it; for then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall have good success.

9 Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

New Testament

Philippians 4:10-13

10 But I rejoice in the Lord greatly that now at length you have revived your thought for me; in which you did indeed take thought, but you lacked opportunity.

11 Not that I speak because of lack, for I have learnt in whatever state I am, to be content in it.

12 I know how to be humbled, and I also know how to abound. In any and all circumstances I have learnt the secret both to be filled and to be hungry, both to abound and to be in need.

13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

Thought for the Day

Joshua is told to be strong and courageous. Not because he feels strong, but because the work ahead is bigger than him. The command is paired with a promise: the Lord will be with him. And it is paired with a practice: keep God’s word close, not as a slogan but as meditation, so courage becomes something deeper than adrenaline.

Philippians gives resilience a surprisingly gentle shape. Paul thanks his friends for their support, yet he speaks of contentment learned in want and in abundance. He does not pretend that hardship is fine. He learns how to stand in it without being undone.

Play can be part of this learning. Not as escapism, but as restoration: the body moving, laughter returning, friendships strengthening, the nervous system settling. For children especially, safe play is often where courage is rebuilt.

Lord, give us resilience that is humble and durable. Bless those who create safe places of play: teachers, youth workers, coaches, and local organisers. Provide for those whose lives feel constrained by poverty or illness, so rest and recreation are not luxuries for the few. And teach us to be present to one another, so that strength is shared, courage is encouraged, and hope is kept alive in ordinary days.
