Old Testament

Song of Solomon 2:10-13

10 My beloved spoke, and said to me, “Rise up, my love, my beautiful one, and come away.

11 For behold, the winter is past. The rain is over and gone.

12 The flowers appear on the earth. The time of the singing has come, and the voice of the turtledove is heard in our land.

13 The fig tree ripens her green figs. The vines are in blossom. They give out their fragrance. Arise, my love, my beautiful one, and come away.”

New Testament

1 Corinthians 10:31

31 Whether therefore you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

Thought for the Day

The Song of Solomon is unhurried. It notices the seasons: winter passing, rain ending, blossoms appearing, the voice of the turtledove returning. It is the poetry of ordinary goodness, the world made vivid again. Love speaks, and the earth answers.

Then Paul offers a line plain enough to carry through any day: whatever you do, do it for the glory of God. Not only praying, not only singing, not only “spiritual” tasks. Eating and drinking, working and cleaning, writing emails, mending things, teaching children, cooking supper. The everyday can be offered.

Creativity is not reserved for galleries. It happens in kitchens, classrooms, workshops, allotments, and sitting rooms. It is the patient shaping of what is given: making order where there was clutter, warmth where there was coldness, welcome where there was loneliness. In that sense, daily creativity is a kind of neighbourly public service.

Lord, tune our attention to your gifts. Teach us to work without grumbling and to make without showing off. Give us delight that is not escapist, and discipline that is not joyless. And let the small things we do today, done in love, become part of our worship: a quiet way of saying that you are worthy, and that your world is worth tending.
