Old Testament

Exodus 35:30-35

30 Moses said to the children of Israel, “Behold, the LORD has called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah.

New Testament

1 Peter 4:10-11

10 As each has received a gift, employ it in serving one another, as good managers of the grace of God in its various forms.

11 If anyone speaks, let it be as it were the very words of God. If anyone serves, let it be as of the strength which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Thought for the Day

In Exodus, creativity is not treated as a pleasant extra. The Lord calls Bezalel by name and fills him with the Spirit: skill, intelligence, knowledge, and the capacity to work in wood and metal, in stone and thread. The tabernacle is not only commanded; it is crafted. Worship is shaped by hands as well as by words.

Peter speaks of gifts in the same spirit. Each has received a charisma, a grace-gift to be used for others. Some speak; some serve. But all are stewards, and all are to do their work in a way that returns praise to God. Creativity, then, is not simply self-expression. It is neighbour-love with texture and form.

This matters for public life. A society that loses its crafts and stories loses part of its moral memory. It becomes easier to flatten people into functions, and easier to treat places as disposable. But when culture is tended, people are helped to see again: the worth of a child, the weight of grief, the sweetness of joy, the dignity of labour.

Lord, thank you for gifts given freely. Teach us to use them without envy or vanity, and to receive the gifts of others without suspicion. Bless those who make, teach, and preserve. And let our creativity, however ordinary, become a modest offering: a way of serving one another, and of honouring you.
