Proverbs 4:1-9

1 Listen, sons, to a father’s instruction. Pay attention and know understanding;

2 for I give you sound learning. Don’t forsake my law.

7 Wisdom is supreme. Get wisdom. Yes, though it costs all your possessions, get understanding.

8 Esteem her, and she will exalt you. She will bring you to honour when you embrace her.

New Testament

2 Timothy 3:14-17

14 But you remain in the things which you have learnt and have been assured of, knowing from whom you have learnt them.

15 From infancy, you have known the holy Scriptures which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

16 Every Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness,

17 that each person who belongs to God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Thought for the Day

Proverbs does not begin with a classroom but a household: a father teaching, children listening, wisdom offered with the tenderness of inheritance. In that world, chokmah is not mere information. It is the skill of living rightly before God: a mind trained toward truth, a will trained toward the good, a heart trained away from folly.

Paul writes to Timothy with the same gravity. He speaks of Scriptures learned early, not as trivia but as a road: words that can make us wise for salvation in Christ, words that reprove, correct, and train. Education, at its best, does not simply unlock careers. It unlocks a person. It gives language for prayer, courage for conscience, and steadiness in a confusing world.

In public life, education can become a ladder for the few, or a table set for many. It can be hoarded as advantage, or offered as common mercy. The Church should learn to bless teachers, librarians, carers, mentors, and parents: those who hold open the door of learning for children and adults alike.

Lord, give us a love of what is true and a patience to be taught. Make our learning humble, not proud; generous, not competitive. And wherever education has been denied or distorted, bring freedom: the freedom of minds awakened, and the deeper freedom of hearts turned toward you.
