Old Testament

Micah 4:1-5

1 But in the latter days, it will happen that the mountain of the LORD’s temple will be established on the top of the mountains, and it will be exalted above the hills; and peoples will stream to it.

2 Many nations will go and say, “Come! Let’s go up to the mountain of the LORD, and to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths.” For the law will go out of Zion, and the LORD’s word from Jerusalem;

3 and he will judge between many peoples, and will decide concerning strong nations afar off. They will beat their swords into ploughshares, and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not lift up sword against nation, neither will they learn war any more.

4 But every man will sit under his vine and under his fig tree. No one will make them afraid, for the mouth of the LORD of Armies has spoken.

5 Indeed all the nations may walk in the name of their gods, but we will walk in the name of the LORD our God forever and ever.

New Testament

Mark 6:30-44

30 The apostles gathered themselves together to Jesus, and they told him all things, whatever they had done, and whatever they had taught.

31 He said to them, “Come away into a deserted place, and rest awhile.” For there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat.

32 They went away in the boat to a deserted place by themselves.

33 They saw them going, and many recognised him and ran there on foot from all the cities. They arrived before them and came together to him.

34 Jesus came out, saw a great multitude, and he had compassion on them because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things.

35 When it was late in the day, his disciples came to him and said, “This place is deserted, and it is late in the day.

36 Send them away, that they may go into the surrounding country and villages and buy themselves bread, for they have nothing to eat.”

37 But he answered them, “You give them something to eat.” They asked him, “Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give them something to eat?”

38 He said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go see.” When they knew, they said, “Five, and two fish.”

39 He commanded them that everyone should sit down in groups on the green grass.

40 They sat down in ranks, by hundreds and by fifties.

41 He took the five loaves and the two fish; and looking up to heaven, he blessed and broke the loaves, and he gave to his disciples to set before them, and he divided the two fish amongst them all.

42 They all ate and were filled.

43 They took up twelve baskets full of broken pieces and also of the fish.

44 Those who ate the loaves were five thousand men.

Thought for the Day

Micah imagines the nations streaming toward the mountain of the Lord. It is a picture of movement with purpose: people coming to learn God’s ways, to walk in his paths. Then it ends in settled peace: each person under their vine and fig tree, unafraid. Good movement leads to good dwelling.

Mark tells of crowds gathering in a “desolate place.” Jesus does not dismiss them as inconvenient. He has compassion. He organises the disciples, receives the loaves, and feeds the people until all are satisfied. Provision arrives where the map says there is nothing.

Rural communities can feel like that desolate place: services far away, journeys long, connectivity patchy, a sense of being forgotten by decisions made elsewhere. Scripture does not treat distance as morally neutral. It asks whether provision reaches people where they actually live. Let the last mile not become a quiet abandonment.

Lord, bring connection without extraction. Give practical wisdom for rural transport, reliable networks, and sustainable services. Teach us to see the neighbour at the end of the road as fully present to you. And make your Church a people who do not shrug at isolation, but who, like Christ, organise compassion until all are fed.
