Old Testament

Psalm 82:1-4

1 God presides in the great assembly. He judges amongst the gods.

2 “How long will you judge unjustly, and show partiality to the wicked?” Selah.

3 “Defend the weak, the poor, and the fatherless. Maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed.

4 Rescue the weak and needy. Deliver them out of the hand of the wicked.”

New Testament

Luke 4:18-19

18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to heal the broken hearted, to proclaim release to the captives, recovering of sight to the blind, to deliver those who are crushed,

19 and to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”

Thought for the Day

Psalm 82 imagines God standing in the assembly and judging those called “gods”: those with authority. The charge is blunt. Stop showing favour to the wicked. Give justice to the weak and the fatherless. Maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute. Rescue the weak and needy. It is a psalm that makes neglect sound like a theological failure.

Jesus, in Luke, announces his mission in Isaiah’s words: good news to the poor, freedom for captives, sight for the blind, release for the oppressed. The kingdom comes with particular attention to those who are vulnerable.

Education for the vulnerable is therefore not charity as an optional extra. It is an act of rescue. It is about language for those without it, support for those with disability, stability for children in care, second chances for those leaving prison, patient pathways for those who have been failed.

Lord, judge our neglect and heal it. Give courage to those who advocate for the weak within systems. Provide resources where provision is thin. And teach your Church to ask, with honest love, how we would want this child treated if they were seated beside us at the Lord’s Table: seen, protected, taught, and given room to flourish.

Prayer Points

Respond
  • Defend vulnerable learners: children in care, those with disability, refugees, the poor, and those at risk of exclusion.
  • Give wisdom and resources for specialist support, safeguarding, and trauma-aware education.
  • Strengthen advocates: social workers, SEN teams, charities, and carers who fight quietly for the overlooked.
