Old Testament

Ruth 3:1-13

1 Naomi her mother-in-law said to her, “My daughter, shall I not seek rest for you, that it may be well with you?

2 Now isn’t Boaz our kinsman, with whose maidens you were? Behold, he will be winnowing barley tonight on the threshing floor.

3 Therefore wash yourself, anoint yourself, get dressed, and go down to the threshing floor; but don’t make yourself known to the man until he has finished eating and drinking.

4 It shall be, when he lies down, that you shall note the place where he is lying. Then you shall go in, uncover his feet, and lie down. Then he will tell you what to do.”

5 She said to her, “All that you say, I will do.”

6 She went down to the threshing floor, and did everything that her mother-in-law told her.

7 When Boaz had eaten and drunk, and his heart was merry, he went to lie down at the end of the heap of grain. She came softly, uncovered his feet, and lay down.

8 At midnight, the man was startled and turned himself; and behold, a woman lay at his feet.

9 He said, “Who are you?” She answered, “I am Ruth your servant. Therefore spread the corner of your garment over your servant; for you are a near kinsman.”

10 He said, “You are blessed by the LORD, my daughter. You have shown more kindness in the latter end than at the beginning, because you didn’t follow young men, whether poor or rich.

11 Now, my daughter, don’t be afraid. I will do to you all that you say; for all the city of my people knows that you are a worthy woman.

12 Now it is true that I am a near kinsman. However, there is a kinsman nearer than I.

13 Stay this night, and in the morning, if he will perform for you the part of a kinsman, good. Let him do the kinsman’s duty. But if he will not do the duty of a kinsman for you, then I will do the duty of a kinsman for you, as the LORD lives. Lie down until the morning.”

New Testament

Luke 8:1-3

1 Soon afterwards, he went about through cities and villages, preaching and bringing the good news of God’s Kingdom. With him were the twelve,

2 and certain women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary who was called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out;

3 and Joanna, the wife of Chuzas, Herod’s steward; Susanna; and many others who served them from their possessions.

Thought for the Day

Ruth moves through a world where a woman’s safety is fragile and her options narrow. Naomi seeks "rest" for her, not in sentiment but in practical protection. The scene at the threshing floor is careful and strange to modern ears, yet it is driven by a simple need: for Ruth to be covered, not exposed; provided for, not left to chance.

Luke tells us that women travelled with Jesus and supported his ministry "out of their means." They are not presented as background colour. They are participants, patrons, disciples. In a culture with rigid boundaries, Christ’s movement gathers those pushed to the edge into the work of the kingdom.

Dignity in work and leadership is not only about titles. It is about safety, honour, and the ability to use one’s gifts without fear. That includes women whose labour is diminished, but it also includes those sidelined by class, accent, disability, race, or other habits of social ranking. It is also about learning how to pray when lives are not simple: when a household is carrying estrangement, transition, anxiety, or disagreement about what faithfulness asks. Christians need not call every non-normative situation good in order to refuse contempt. We can ask for truthfulness, safeguarding, mercy, repentance, and steadiness, while still speaking of every person as precious before God.

Lord, give dignity in labour and courage in leadership. Protect those whose work is unseen and undervalued. Give employers and organisations practices that honour safety and fairness. And make your Church a place where vulnerable people are not turned into symbols, but held with prayerful seriousness and love.

Prayer Points

Respond
  • Provide safe, dignified work and fair opportunity for leadership and growth, especially for those whom power has sidelined.
  • Protect workers from harassment, coercion, and exploitation; give clear accountability and safe reporting, especially for women and others made vulnerable by unequal power.
  • Strengthen those doing unseen labour; grant recognition, fair pay, and rest.
