Strength for Those Who Serve

Old Testament

Isaiah 58:6-11

6 “Isn’t this the fast that I have chosen: to release the bonds of wickedness, to undo the straps of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and that you break every yoke?

7 Isn’t it to distribute your bread to the hungry, and that you bring the poor who are cast out to your house? When you see the naked, that you cover him; and that you not hide yourself from your own flesh?

8 Then your light will break out as the morning, and your healing will appear quickly; then your righteousness shall go before you, and the LORD’s glory will be your rear guard.

9 Then you will call, and the LORD will answer. You will cry for help, and he will say, ‘Here I am.’ “If you take away from amongst you the yoke, finger pointing, and speaking wickedly;

10 and if you pour out your soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul, then your light will rise in darkness, and your obscurity will be as the noonday;

11 and the LORD will guide you continually, satisfy your soul in dry places, and make your bones strong. You will be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water whose waters don’t fail.

New Testament

Galatians 6:1-10

1 Brothers, even if a man is caught in some fault, you who are spiritual must restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, looking to yourself so that you also aren’t tempted.

2 Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

3 For if a man thinks himself to be something when he is nothing, he deceives himself.

4 But let each man examine his own work, and then he will have reason to boast in himself, and not in someone else.

5 For each man will bear his own burden.

6 But let him who is taught in the word share all good things with him who teaches.

7 Don’t be deceived. God is not mocked, for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.

8 For he who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption. But he who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.

9 Let’s not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season if we don’t give up.

10 So then, as we have opportunity, let’s do what is good towards all men, and especially towards those who are of the household of the faith.

Thought for the Day

Isaiah 58 refuses a fast that ends in self-congratulation. True devotion loosens bonds, shares bread, welcomes the homeless poor, and does not hide from your own flesh and blood. Then God promises something tender: your light rises in the darkness, and the Lord will “satisfy your desire in scorched places”.

Paul tells the Galatians how to carry one another without collapsing. Restore with gentleness. Bear burdens. Do not grow weary of doing good. There is a season, he insists, when we will reap if we do not give up.

Those who serve displaced people often live in that “scorched place”: long days, complex needs, slow bureaucracy, heartbreaking stories, limited resources. The temptation is either numbness or saviour-complex. Scripture offers a different strength: gentleness, perseverance, and the humility to be supported as well as to support. We serve best when we remember we are not the Messiah. We, too, need mercy.

Lord, strengthen humanitarian workers, volunteers, caseworkers, teachers, medical staff, and neighbours who keep showing up. Give them rest without guilt and courage without hardness. Protect them from burnout and from cynicism. And let their labour be lit by your mercy: not frantic, not performative, but steady love that endures.
