Old Testament

Joshua 1:6-9

6 “Be strong and courageous; for you shall cause this people to inherit the land which I swore to their fathers to give them.

7 Only be strong and very courageous. Be careful to observe to do according to all the law which Moses my servant commanded you. Don’t turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success wherever you go.

8 This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it; for then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall have good success.

9 Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

New Testament

Acts 4:29-31

29 Now, Lord, look at their threats, and grant to your servants to speak your word with all boldness,

30 while you stretch out your hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done through the name of your holy Servant Jesus.”

31 When they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were gathered together. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness.

Thought for the Day

Joshua stands at the edge of a daunting task, and the Lord repeats the command: be strong and courageous. Not because Joshua is naturally brave, but because God is with him. Courage, here, is obedience under pressure. It is steadiness when the future is unknown.

Lord, give your people courage that is clean. Keep us from fear and from arrogance. Teach us to speak the word of Christ with gentleness, and to live it with integrity, so that our neighbours may see not a threat, but good news.

In Acts, the early church does not pray for an easier environment. They pray for parrēsia (παρρησία): boldness, frankness, freedom to speak. They ask the Lord to look upon threats, and to grant his servants courage. And the answer is not only inner reassurance, but a shaken room and a people filled with the Spirit.

Witness in a plural society is not shouting. It is clarity with love. It is speaking truthfully without contempt. It is living openly without demanding control. The visible conviction of others need not make Christians panicked or besieged; our faith is not so fragile. Sometimes boldness means words; sometimes it means quiet refusal to lie; sometimes it means patient goodness that cannot be explained away. It also means prayer: asking God to keep our courage clean.
