Old Testament

Isaiah 60:1-3

1 “Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the LORD’s glory has risen on you!

2 For behold, darkness will cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but the LORD will arise on you, and his glory shall be seen on you.

3 Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising.

New Testament

1 Peter 4:8-11

8 And above all things be earnest in your love amongst yourselves, for love covers a multitude of sins.

9 Be hospitable to one another without grumbling.

10 As each has received a gift, employ it in serving one another, as good managers of the grace of God in its various forms.

11 If anyone speaks, let it be as it were the very words of God. If anyone serves, let it be as of the strength which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Thought for the Day

Isaiah’s vision is light in darkness: “Arise, shine, for your light has come.” The radiance is not self-made. It is the Lord’s glory rising upon his people, drawing others towards hope.

Peter tells the Church how that light often looks in practice. Above all, keep love fervent, because love covers a multitude of sins. Show hospitality without grumbling. Use the gifts God supplies to serve one another, so that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ.

A generous church is not one that merely funds good work, though it should. It is one that embodies a different social atmosphere: warmth without manipulation, welcome without judgement, help without humiliation. This is how public life is healed: not by grand gestures, but by sustained, ordinary mercy. It becomes, in a small way, a sign of the coming Kingdom: a family table widened, a door held open, a burden shared.

Lord, make us such a people. Let our love be fervent and our hospitality glad. Teach us to serve with the strength you provide, and to give in ways that point beyond us to you. Make the Church a beacon not by noise, but by kindness that can be trusted.
