Old Testament

Deuteronomy 15:7-11

7 If a poor man, one of your brothers, is with you within any of your gates in your land which the LORD your God gives you, you shall not harden your heart, nor shut your hand from your poor brother;

8 but you shall surely open your hand to him, and shall surely lend him sufficient for his need, which he lacks.

9 Beware that there not be a wicked thought in your heart, saying, “The seventh year, the year of release, is at hand,” and your eye be evil against your poor brother and you give him nothing; and he cry to the LORD against you, and it be sin to you.

10 You shall surely give, and your heart shall not be grieved when you give to him, because it is for this thing the LORD your God will bless you in all your work and in all that you put your hand to.

11 For the poor will never cease out of the land. Therefore I command you to surely open your hand to your brother, to your needy, and to your poor, in your land.

New Testament

Hebrews 13:15-16

15 Through him, then, let’s offer up a sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of lips which proclaim allegiance to his name.

16 But don’t forget to be doing good and sharing, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.

Thought for the Day

Deuteronomy does not permit a hard heart. If there is a poor neighbour among you, you must open your hand. “You shall give,” it says, and you shall not grudge the gift. Mercy is commanded not because God is sentimental, but because he is faithful: he is forming a people who resemble him.

Lord, forgive us for praising you with lips while closing our hands. Make our worship whole. Teach us to give generously and wisely, without bitterness and without pride. And let those who receive help taste not our virtue, but your kindness.

Hebrews calls us to worship “through him”: the sacrifice of praise, the fruit of lips that confess Christ. Then, without pause, it adds another sacrifice: do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices please God. Praise and sharing belong together.

This is a correction to our instincts. We like to separate prayer from practice, worship from money, the sanctuary from the street. Scripture refuses the split. Charity is not a hobby for the compassionate. It is part of the Church’s liturgy: love made material. It is a way of saying thank you with your life. Our gifts become incense when they are offered without contempt.
