Thought for the Day

Psalm 91 speaks in the language of shelter: the secret place, the shadow, the refuge. It is a psalm that has often been prayed in danger, and it gives words for fear. Yet it is not a charm. It is faith: a way of placing oneself under the care of the Most High.

Paul writes, with quiet confidence, that the Lord is faithful: he will strengthen you and guard you from the evil one. In crisis, we often discover how little control we truly have. Scripture does not pretend otherwise. It directs us to the One who is faithful.

So we pray for protection with humility. We do not claim immunity from harm; we ask for mercy. We ask for courage for those in danger and wisdom for those who must act quickly. Keep us humble. We ask for safe routes, sound judgement, steady hands, and clear communication. We ask for mercy in the unseen moments.

Lord, be a shield to those exposed tonight: responders and victims, evacuees and neighbours who cannot leave. Protect the vulnerable. Turn back what is destructive. And make us a people who do not merely watch from a distance, but pray, give, and help where we can.
