Energy as a Tool for Peace

Scripture References

Old Testament

Isaiah 2:2-4

2 It shall happen in the latter days, that the mountain of the LORD’s house shall be established on the top of the mountains, and shall be raised above the hills; and all nations shall flow to it.

3 Many peoples shall go and say, “Come, let’s go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths.” For the law shall go out of Zion, and the LORD’s word from Jerusalem.

4 He will judge between the nations, and will decide concerning many peoples. They shall beat their swords into ploughshares, and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.

New Testament

Matthew 5:9

9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.

Thought for the Day

Isaiah imagines the nations streaming to the mountain of the Lord, not to learn new weaponry but to learn God’s ways. And then comes the picture that has steadied so many prayers: swords beaten into ploughshares, spears into pruning hooks. Instruments of death turned into tools for life.

Jesus blesses the peacemakers. Not the peace-claimers, or the peace-talkers, but the peace-makers: those who do the costly work of reconciliation and restraint. Peace, in Scripture, is not mere quiet; it is a life in which neighbours can flourish.

Energy can be a tool for peace, or a tool for threat. It can be turned into leverage, scarcity, and fear. Or it can be tended as a shared good that keeps homes warm, hospitals running, and communities stable. Peace is practical. Peace-making in public life may look like refusing to exploit dependence, choosing cooperation over humiliation, and planning for resilience rather than domination.

Lord, make us eirēnopoioi (εἰρηνοποιοί): people who do peace. Teach us to desire the flourishing of those beyond our boundaries, and to seek public arrangements that reduce fear and increase stability. Make us steady. Let your Kingdom shape our imagination until ploughshares feel more natural than swords.
