The Church’s Role in the Digital Age

Scripture References

Read First

Old Testament

Isaiah 60:1-3

1 “Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the LORD’s glory has risen on you!

2 For behold, darkness will cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but the LORD will arise on you, and his glory shall be seen on you.

3 Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising.

New Testament

Matthew 5:14-16

14 “You are the light of the world. A city located on a hill can’t be hidden.

15 Neither do you light a lamp and put it under a measuring basket, but on a stand; and it shines to all who are in the house.

16 Even so, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

Thought for the Day

Isaiah sees the people of God as waking into light: “Arise, shine, for your light has come.” It is not self-generated radiance, but the Lord’s glory rising upon them. The nations, Isaiah says, come to that light.

Jesus echoes the image with a startling directness: “You are the light of the world.” Not because Christians are naturally bright, but because we belong to him. We do not light our own lamps; we bear his.

In the digital age, the Church’s role is not to chase every trend, nor to retreat into purity behind locked doors. It is to live visibly as a people shaped by Christ: truthful without being harsh, discerning without becoming suspicious, courageous without becoming cruel. Light is not noise. It is clarity. It helps people see. We belong to a King; we can afford to be truthful, to be slow, and to be kind.

Lord Jesus, keep our witness clean. Make our online speech patient and honest, our sharing restrained, our anger slow, our mercy quick. Teach us to be a city on a hill without pride, and a lamp on a stand without performance, so that others may glimpse your goodness and give glory to the Father.
