New Testament

John 10:11-15

11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

12 He who is a hired hand, and not a shepherd, who doesn’t own the sheep, sees the wolf coming, leaves the sheep, and flees. The wolf snatches the sheep and scatters them.

13 The hired hand flees because he is a hired hand and doesn’t care for the sheep.

15 even as the Father knows me, and I know the Father. I lay down my life for the sheep.

Thought for the Day

Psalm 121 lifts our eyes from the anxiety of self-protection to the steadiness of God. The Lord is not a sleepy guard. He does not slumber. He keeps watch, not with paranoia but with faithful attention.

Jesus takes up a similar theme, and deepens it into sacrifice. “I am the good shepherd,” he says. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. This is not security as control, but security as love: knowing the flock, staying when danger comes, refusing the easy escape of indifference.

Our digital lives are part of our neighbourly lives now. They are places where people can be harassed, defrauded, exposed, or quietly harmed; places where the lonely are targeted and the trusting are exploited. To secure digital spaces is therefore not merely technical work. It is, at its best, shepherd-work: guarding the vulnerable, limiting the power of the wolves, building patterns that make it harder to hurt others unseen.

Lord Jesus, our Shepherd, keep us. Give wisdom to those who build and govern systems of protection, and give tenderness towards those who have been harmed. Make the Church a safe place: slow to blame, quick to listen, and steady in care.
