Old Testament

Zechariah 8:4-5

4 The LORD of Armies says: “Old men and old women will again dwell in the streets of Jerusalem, every man with his staff in his hand because of their old age.

5 The streets of the city will be full of boys and girls playing in its streets.”

New Testament

Acts 2:44-47

44 All who believed were together, and had all things in common.

45 They sold their possessions and goods, and distributed them to all, according as anyone had need.

46 Day by day, continuing steadfastly with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread at home, they took their food with gladness and singleness of heart,

47 praising God and having favour with all the people. The Lord added to the assembly day by day those who were being saved.

Thought for the Day

Zechariah imagines a healed city with tender concreteness: old men and women sitting in the streets, each with a staff, and children playing in the open squares. Peace is pictured not as propaganda but as ordinary safety across generations. A society is judged, in part, by whether the old can linger and the young can laugh.

Acts gives us another kind of public hope: believers together, sharing what they have, breaking bread with glad hearts, and finding favour with the people. It is not an escape from society, but a new social life formed by the Spirit.

Hope for future generations is not only a policy question. It is a spiritual posture. Do we build a world where the old can rest without fear and the young can play without danger? Do we treat tomorrow as someone else’s problem, or as a neighbour we are responsible to love, with patience rather than panic?

Lord, make our communities places where children flourish and elders are honoured. Teach your Church to share, to welcome, and to practise joy that has room for the vulnerable. Let our common life become a sign of the kingdom that is coming, and let our sharing be a prophecy of your peace.
