5 They shall fear you while the sun endures; and as long as the moon, throughout all generations.

6 He will come down like rain on the mown grass, as showers that water the earth.

New Testament

1 Timothy 2:1-2

1 I exhort therefore, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and givings of thanks be made for all men,

2 for kings and all who are in high places, that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and reverence.

Thought for the Day

Psalm 72 gives us words for praying about leadership without flattery. It asks God to give the king justice, to defend the poor, to bring peace like rain. Good government is pictured not as swagger, but as protection and right order: a ruler who serves the common good rather than himself.

Lord, give our leaders wisdom, courage, and clean hands. Keep them from fear and vanity. And make us faithful intercessors: hopeful without illusion, honest without contempt, and steady in love for the neighbour you set before us.

Paul tells Timothy to pray ‘first of all’ for everyone, including kings and all in high positions. The aim is not political control, but a quiet life in godliness and dignity, so that the gospel may be heard. Prayer is part of the Church’s public responsibility, and it is a mark of maturity rather than a last resort.

In a noisy age, prayer for leaders can feel either naive or partisan. Scripture refuses both. We intercede because God is God; we give thanks because authority is not nothing; we ask for integrity because corruption wounds real people: the poor first, the unheard most. We pray not to baptise every decision, but to ask for wisdom, restraint, and repentance where it is needed.
