Old Testament

Daniel 2:44-45

44 “In the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which will never be destroyed, nor will its sovereignty be left to another people; but it will break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it will stand forever.

45 Because you saw that a stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it broke in pieces the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver, and the gold, the great God has made known to the king what will happen hereafter. The dream is certain, and its interpretation sure.”

New Testament

Revelation 7:9-17

9 After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no man could count, out of every nation and of all tribes, peoples, and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, dressed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands.

10 They cried with a loud voice, saying, “Salvation be to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!”

11 All the angels were standing around the throne, the elders, and the four living creatures; and they fell on their faces before his throne, and worshipped God,

12 saying, “Amen! Blessing, glory, wisdom, thanksgiving, honour, power, and might, be to our God forever and ever! Amen.”

13 One of the elders answered, saying to me, “These who are arrayed in the white robes, who are they, and where did they come from?”

14 I told him, “My lord, you know.” He said to me, “These are those who came out of the great suffering. They washed their robes and made them white in the Lamb’s blood.

15 Therefore they are before the throne of God, and they serve him day and night in his temple. He who sits on the throne will spread his tabernacle over them.

16 They will never be hungry or thirsty any more. The sun won’t beat on them, nor any heat;

17 for the Lamb who is in the middle of the throne shepherds them and leads them to springs of life-giving waters. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”

Thought for the Day

Daniel speaks from exile and refuses despair. Empires rise like statues in a dream and fall like brittle clay, but God sets up a kingdom that will not be destroyed. History is not a closed system of power; it is moving towards a reign that cannot be bought, bullied, or outlasted.

This is the horizon of our concern for global justice. We do not work for fairness in trade because we imagine we can save the world. We do it because the world belongs to Jesus, because every worker and every child is meant for worship, because the Lamb is gathering a people.

Revelation draws the curtain back further: a multitude no one can count, from every nation and tongue, gathered before the throne and the Lamb. They carry palm branches of victory, clothed in white, and the promise is tender as well as grand: no more hunger, no more scorching heat, tears wiped away. The Lamb himself will shepherd them to springs of life.

Lord, keep our hope clean. Make us faithful in the small public duties of truth and mercy, while we wait for your unshakable kingdom. Teach us to live as citizens of heaven with hands still open on earth, and hearts widened by worship.
