Colossians 1:15-20
15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.
16 For by him all things were created in the heavens and on the earth, visible things and invisible things, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things have been created through him and for him.
17 He is before all things, and in him all things are held together.
18 He is the head of the body, the assembly, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things he might have the preeminence.
19 For all the fullness was pleased to dwell in him,
20 and through him to reconcile all things to himself by him, whether things on the earth or things in the heavens, having made peace through the blood of his cross.
Psalm 24 begins with a sentence that re-orders everything: the earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it. Not only the beautiful places and the easy days, but the resources we rely on, the work we build, the heat in our homes, the lights in our streets. Creation is not raw material; it is the Lord’s possession and the Lord’s praise.
Colossians takes that claim to its centre. Christ is before all things, and in him all things hold together. The world is not held by our competence. It is held by a Person. And the reconciliation God is making is not small. It reaches to “all things,” through the blood of the cross.
This does not make the material world less important. It makes it more holy. It means our use of creation is never merely technical. It is always moral. We are not owners; we are stewards. We are heirs in Christ, yet still subjects under the King who loves what he has made.
Lord Jesus, teach us gratitude for the gift of energy and the gift of earth. Forgive us where we treat creation as disposable, and neighbours as collateral. Give us wisdom that is patient and just, so that our common life can be warmed and sustained without leaving the vulnerable in the cold.
