Old Testament

Psalm 68:4-6

4 Sing to God! Sing praises to his name! Extol him who rides on the clouds: to the LORD, his name! Rejoice before him!

5 A father of the fatherless, and a defender of the widows, is God in his holy habitation.

6 God sets the lonely in families. He brings out the prisoners with singing, but the rebellious dwell in a sun-scorched land.

New Testament

John 14:18-21

18 I will not leave you orphans. I will come to you.

19 Yet a little while, and the world will see me no more; but you will see me. Because I live, you will live also.

20 In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.

21 One who has my commandments and keeps them, that person is one who loves me. One who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him, and will reveal myself to him.”

Thought for the Day

Psalm 68 dares to name God’s character in the most domestic language: Father of the fatherless, defender of widows. He sets the lonely in families. It is not a sentimental picture. It is a promise that God’s power is turned towards those who have been left without protection.

Jesus speaks with the same tenderness in John: "I will not leave you as orphans." ὀρφανός is not only a legal status; it is the ache of being abandoned, unprovided for, and alone. Christ answers it with presence: "I am coming to you."

To pray about fostering, adoption, and child social care is to begin here: God does not treat vulnerable children as a footnote. He refuses to let them be invisible. So we pray for safe households, for wise assessments, for patient processes, for protection from exploitation, and for the courage to intervene early. And when Scripture says God sets the lonely in families, we need not imagine only one tidy form. Foster homes, adoptive homes, kinship care, temporary placements, reunited households, and homes still carrying strain and grief may all become places where his mercy is worked out.

Lord Jesus, come to the lonely. Set the solitary in families, and where family life is still fragile, make your presence known there too. Teach us to love with steadiness, not with momentary feeling, but with faithful staying.
