Old Testament

Micah 6:6-8

6 How shall I come before the LORD, and bow myself before the exalted God? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old?

7 Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams? With tens of thousands of rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my disobedience? The fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?

8 He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does the LORD require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

New Testament

Romans 12:9-21

9 Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor that which is evil. Cling to that which is good.

10 In love of the brothers be tenderly affectionate to one another; in honour prefer one another,

11 not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord,

14 Bless those who persecute you; bless, and don’t curse.

15 Rejoice with those who rejoice. Weep with those who weep.

16 Be of the same mind one towards another. Don’t set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Don’t be wise in your own conceits.

17 Repay no one evil for evil. Respect what is honourable in the sight of all men.

18 If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men.

19 Don’t seek revenge yourselves, beloved, but give place to God’s wrath. For it is written, “Vengeance belongs to me; I will repay, says the Lord.”

20 Therefore “If your enemy is hungry, feed him. If he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in doing so, you will heap coals of fire on his head.”

21 Don’t be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Thought for the Day

Micah refuses to let religion hide behind grand gestures. God is not impressed by volume: thousands of rams, rivers of oil, extravagant offerings. What does the Lord require? Do justice. Love mercy. Walk humbly with your God. It is disarmingly simple, and uncomfortably near.

Lord, give us justice that listens and mercy that stays. Keep our speech from cruelty. Teach us to walk humbly, refusing both cynicism and self-righteousness. And as we come, once again, to one table in Christ, make us the sort of people who would want the same care for our own kin.

Romans 12 takes that triad and gives it texture. Let love be genuine. Cling to what is good. Bless those who persecute you. Weep with those who weep. Do not repay evil for evil. Overcome evil with good. The Christian life is not merely private morality; it is a way of being human together.

If social care is to be compassionate, it cannot be built on contempt. It must be shaped for the neighbour who is easiest to overlook: the one who is confused, unwell, addicted, unhouseable, ageing, traumatised, or simply tired of being assessed. It must make room for patience and for dignity.
