Old Testament

Isaiah 61:1-4

1 The Lord GOD’s Spirit is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the humble. He has sent me to bind up the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and release to those who are bound,

2 to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favour and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn,

3 to provide for those who mourn in Zion, to give to them a garland for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness, that they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he may be glorified.

4 They will rebuild the old ruins. They will raise up the former devastated places. They will repair the ruined cities that have been devastated for many generations.

New Testament

Luke 4:18-19

18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to heal the broken hearted, to proclaim release to the captives, recovering of sight to the blind, to deliver those who are crushed,

19 and to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”

Thought for the Day

Isaiah dares to describe salvation as a kind of repair. The Spirit comes not for the already-put-together, but for the poor, the broken-hearted, the captive, the crushed. Ashes are met with beauty; mourning with gladness; faint spirits with praise. The prophet does not deny grief. He announces what God does with it.

Luke shows Jesus opening this scroll and reading it as his own vocation. The good news is not an idea. It is a person standing in a synagogue, saying, in effect: this is what I have come for. If that is true, then stigma is not merely unkind. It is a refusal to recognise the kind of kingdom Christ brings.

We pray for those who carry mental illness in silence, fearing that they will be labelled, avoided, or made into a cautionary tale. We pray for families who have walked through long, bewildering seasons, and for professionals who must hold distress with both tenderness and boundaries.

Lord Jesus, make us a people who do not flinch from brokenness. Give us speech that is truthful and gentle, not prurient or panicked. Let your Church be a place where sufferers are treated as brethren, and where shame loses its power. Proclaim liberty in our hearts, and mercy in our common life.
