Old Testament

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

9 Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labour.

10 For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him who is alone when he falls, and doesn’t have another to lift him up.

11 Again, if two lie together, then they have warmth; but how can one keep warm alone?

12 If a man prevails against one who is alone, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

New Testament

Galatians 6:1-2

1 Brothers, even if a man is caught in some fault, you who are spiritual must restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, looking to yourself so that you also aren’t tempted.

2 Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

Thought for the Day

Ecclesiastes is unsentimental about loneliness. It does not call solitude heroic; it calls it dangerous. Two are better than one: if one falls, the other can lift them. If the night turns cold, another body can warm. A cord of three strands is not easily broken. It is wisdom for the ordinary days when strength runs out.

Health is not only blood tests and prescriptions. It is also friendship, meals, transport, company in waiting rooms, a phone call that comes at the right time. It is a people who refuse to let the weak disappear.

Paul speaks the same truth in a distinctly Christian key. When someone is caught in sin, restore them gently; and watch yourself, lest pride become your own trap. Then he says it plainly: bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ. βάρος is the weight a person cannot shift alone. In the household of God, no one is meant to carry it unnoticed.

So we ask for communities that heal: for families and neighbours; for churches that do not outsource compassion; for public services that remember how many burdens are invisible. Lord, make us gentle enough to restore, and strong enough to share weight.
