Old Testament

Psalm 78:70-72

70 He also chose David his servant, and took him from the sheepfolds;

71 from following the ewes that have their young, he brought him to be the shepherd of Jacob, his people, and Israel, his inheritance.

72 So he was their shepherd according to the integrity of his heart, and guided them by the skilfulness of his hands.

New Testament

James 3:1-2

1 Let not many of you be teachers, my brothers, knowing that we will receive heavier judgement.

2 For we all stumble in many things. Anyone who doesn’t stumble in word is a perfect person, able to bridle the whole body also.

Thought for the Day

Psalm 78 remembers the Lord taking David from the sheepfolds and setting him over a people, so that he shepherded them “with integrity of heart” and “guided them with skilful hands”. It is a picture of governance that is neither glamorous nor vague: character and competence together, steadiness and craft.

James, meanwhile, warns that not many should rush to be teachers, because those who teach will be judged more strictly, and because “we all stumble in many ways”. In education, the temptation is to speak quickly and govern loudly. Yet Scripture presses us towards humility: the classroom and the boardroom are places where words land on tender minds, where decisions ripple into futures. A stricter judgement is not only a threat; it is a summons to careful love.

As heirs of the King and subjects under his mercy, we pray for governing bodies, headteachers, trustees, chancellors, and all who shape learning. Give them integrity that cannot be bribed, and skill that is willing to be taught. And make us a people who remember the child, the teenager, the anxious undergraduate as our brethren: how would we want them treated if they were beside us at the Lord’s Table, asking for patience, truth, and a fair hearing?

Prayer Points

Respond
  • Lord, give those who govern schools and universities integrity of heart and steadiness of hand; keep them from vanity and fear.
  • Grant teachers humility with authority: words that build up, corrections that do not crush, and a readiness to repent when they stumble.
  • Have mercy on pupils and students who feel unseen or labelled; draw near, and provide timely help through wise people and good systems.
