James, meanwhile, warns that not many should rush to be teachers, because those who teach will be judged more strictly, and because “we all stumble in many ways”. In education, the temptation is to speak quickly and govern loudly. Yet Scripture presses us towards humility: the classroom and the boardroom are places where words land on tender minds, where decisions ripple into futures. A stricter judgement is not only a threat; it is a summons to careful love.
As heirs of the King and subjects under his mercy, we pray for governing bodies, headteachers, trustees, chancellors, and all who shape learning. Give them integrity that cannot be bribed, and skill that is willing to be taught. And make us a people who remember the child, the teenager, the anxious undergraduate as our brethren: how would we want them treated if they were beside us at the Lord’s Table, asking for patience, truth, and a fair hearing?
