Matthew 7:24-27
24 “Everyone therefore who hears these words of mine and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock.
25 The rain came down, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it didn’t fall, for it was founded on the rock.
26 Everyone who hears these words of mine and doesn’t do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand.
27 The rain came down, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell—and its fall was great.”
Proverbs offers a line many parents hold tightly: train up a child in the way they should go, and when they are old they will not depart from it. It is wisdom, not a mechanical guarantee. It tells the truth that early formation matters, without pretending we can control every outcome. Sometimes the ‘way’ a child should go includes the slow work of repair.
Jesus ends the Sermon on the Mount with a house built on rock. The storm comes either way. The difference is not the weather, but whether his words are heard and done. Foundations are not glamorous, but they hold when the wind rises. Obedience is a hidden architecture, learned day by day.
In education we often measure what is visible: scores, targets, neat outcomes. Scripture draws our attention lower down: to the formation of character, truthfulness, patience, courage, and love. These are slow goods, and they are easily neglected, yet they shape a life.
God, lay strong foundations in homes and schools. Help children who struggle to read, to settle, to trust, to speak. Strengthen those who teach and support them. And build in us a steady obedience that can weather change without becoming hard, Lord.
