4 We will not hide them from their children, telling to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, his strength, and his wondrous deeds that he has done.

5 For he established a covenant in Jacob, and appointed a teaching in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children;

6 that the generation to come might know, even the children who should be born; who should arise and tell their children,

7 that they might set their hope in God, and not forget God’s deeds, but keep his commandments,

New Testament

Luke 2:40-52

40 The child was growing, and was becoming strong in spirit, being filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon him.

41 His parents went every year to Jerusalem at the feast of the Passover.

42 When he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem according to the custom of the feast;

43 and when they had fulfilled the days, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. Joseph and his mother didn’t know it,

44 but supposing him to be in the company, they went a day’s journey; and they looked for him amongst their relatives and acquaintances.

45 When they didn’t find him, they returned to Jerusalem, looking for him.

46 After three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the middle of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions.

47 All who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers.

48 When they saw him, they were astonished; and his mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us this way? Behold, your father and I were anxiously looking for you.”

49 He said to them, “Why were you looking for me? Didn’t you know that I must be in my Father’s house?”

50 They didn’t understand the saying which he spoke to them.

51 And he went down with them and came to Nazareth. He was subject to them, and his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.

52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and men.

Thought for the Day

Psalm 78 begins with a summons to listen, and then a promise about memory: we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord. The point is not nostalgia. It is hope. Children are to grow up with a story larger than their fears, so they may set their confidence in God and not forget his works.

Father, bless nurseries and primary schools, health visitors and support workers, safeguarding leads and speech therapists. Give calm courage to families under strain. Let the next generation be helped, not hurried; cherished, not managed.

Luke tells us that the child Jesus grew and became strong, filled with wisdom, and that God’s grace was upon him. Even the Son grows. He learns within a family, within worship, within a community; he asks questions, listens, and returns home. Growth is patient, and grace is present in the ordinary.

Early years support is holy work because it attends to beginnings. It does not despise the small: first words, first friendships, first tears. It offers help before harm becomes habit, and steadiness before panic becomes a culture. It remembers that a child is never ‘just’ a case, and that time matters. It keeps the door open.
