Old Testament

Isaiah 52:7-10

7 How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace, who brings good news, who proclaims salvation, who says to Zion, “Your God reigns!”

8 Your watchmen lift up their voice. Together they sing; for they shall see eye to eye when the LORD returns to Zion.

9 Break out into joy! Sing together, you waste places of Jerusalem; for the LORD has comforted his people. He has redeemed Jerusalem.

10 The LORD has made his holy arm bare in the eyes of all the nations. All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.

New Testament

Luke 2:8-14

8 There were shepherds in the same country staying in the field, and keeping watch by night over their flock.

9 Behold, an angel of the Lord stood by them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.

10 The angel said to them, “Don’t be afraid, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be to all the people.

Thought for the Day

Isaiah pictures the messenger running over the mountains with news so good it makes feet beautiful: “Your God reigns.” The watchmen lift up their voices together, because the Lord has comforted his people. Joy, in Scripture, is not denial. It is the sound of rescue.

Luke places that joy in the night air. Shepherds keep watch, and heaven interrupts with a song: glory to God, peace on earth, goodwill. The first hearers are not the important. They are the awake and the ordinary. God gives the announcement to those on the margins.

The birth of Christ makes public claims. God reigns. Peace is not a fantasy. Yet the path of that peace begins in humility, not force. It comes as gift, not as conquest. The light falls first on open fields, not on polished halls, and it does not flatter our pride.

So pray for good news in weary places. Pray for leaders who serve peace without vanity, and for citizens who do not turn fear into cruelty. Pray for those who work night shifts and those who feel unseen. And let the angels’ song settle your heart: glory to God, and peace. Receive it, then carry it. Let joy become neighbour-love with a steady face.

  • Bless those who work unseen and unsung, especially at night; give safety, rest, and dignity.
