Psalm 107:23-31

26 They mount up to the sky; they go down again to the depths. Their soul melts away because of trouble.

27 They reel back and forth, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wits’ end.

28 Then they cry to the LORD in their trouble, and he brings them out of their distress.

29 He makes the storm a calm, so that its waves are still.

30 Then they are glad because it is calm, so he brings them to their desired haven.

31 Let them praise the LORD for his loving kindness, for his wonderful deeds for the children of men!

New Testament

Matthew 8:23-27

23 When he got into a boat, his disciples followed him.

24 Behold, a violent storm came up on the sea, so much that the boat was covered with the waves; but he was asleep.

25 The disciples came to him and woke him up, saying, “Save us, Lord! We are dying!”

26 He said to them, “Why are you fearful, O you of little faith?” Then he got up, rebuked the wind and the sea, and there was a great calm.

27 The men marvelled, saying, “What kind of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”

Thought for the Day

Psalm 107 turns to the sea. Sailors do their work, but the storm rises, and their courage melts. Then they cry to the Lord, and he stills the waves. The psalm is honest: there are moments when skill is not enough, when life feels too large.

In Matthew, the disciples are in a boat with Jesus, and the storm comes. They wake him in fear. He rebukes the wind and sea, and there is a great calm. The question that lingers is not only “Who is this?” but “Why did you doubt?”

Housing insecurity feels like weather. It is hard to reason with it. One letter, one rent rise, one delay, one broken relationship, and suddenly you are thrown about. People can look calm and still be terrified. The body remembers instability.

So pray for shelter in storms: for emergency provision, for wise intervention, for friends who do not disappear. Pray for those sleeping in unsafe places, and for those carrying fear behind closed doors. Ask, too, for calm courage to seek help early. And ask the Lord who stills seas to give the deeper shelter of his presence: a calm that does not deny trouble, but holds us within it.
