Old Testament

Psalm 68:4-6

4 Sing to God! Sing praises to his name! Extol him who rides on the clouds: to the LORD, his name! Rejoice before him!

5 A father of the fatherless, and a defender of the widows, is God in his holy habitation.

6 God sets the lonely in families. He brings out the prisoners with singing, but the rebellious dwell in a sun-scorched land.

New Testament

1 John 3:17-18

17 But whoever has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, then closes his heart of compassion against him, how does God’s love remain in him?

18 My little children, let’s not love in word only, or with the tongue only, but in deed and truth.

Thought for the Day

Psalm 68 praises the Lord who is “Father of the fatherless” and “protector of widows”. Then it says something almost domestic: God sets the lonely in families. The vulnerable are not merely shielded; they are given belonging.

John is equally direct. If we have the world’s goods and see a brother or sister in need and close our heart, how can God’s love abide in us? Love must not remain in speech alone. It must take flesh. It must become bread, a bed, a door that opens.

Housing is not only a roof. It is safety, rest, privacy, and the ability to plan a life. When people are unhoused or precariously housed, their world becomes smaller: fewer choices, more fear, more waiting. Scripture does not treat that smallness as deserved. It calls it a place where love should move.

So pray for those who feel lonely and displaced. Pray for foster carers, supported housing, host families, and those making careful decisions about placements and provision. Pray for those who have no one to call. And ask that the love of Christ would not become a theory in us. May it become a home-shaped mercy for those who need it, truly.
