Old Testament

1 Kings 17:8-16

8 The LORD’s word came to him, saying,

9 “Arise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and stay there. Behold, I have commanded a widow there to sustain you.”

10 So he arose and went to Zarephath; and when he came to the gate of the city, behold, a widow was there gathering sticks. He called to her and said, “Please get me a little water in a jar, that I may drink.”

11 As she was going to get it, he called to her and said, “Please bring me a morsel of bread in your hand.”

12 She said, “As the LORD your God lives, I don’t have anything baked, but only a handful of meal in a jar and a little oil in a jar. Behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and bake it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die.”

13 Elijah said to her, “Don’t be afraid. Go and do as you have said; but make me a little cake from it first, and bring it out to me, and afterward make some for you and for your son.

14 For the LORD, the God of Israel, says, ‘The jar of meal will not run out, and the jar of oil will not fail, until the day that the LORD sends rain on the earth.’”

15 She went and did according to the saying of Elijah; and she, he, and her household ate many days.

16 The jar of meal didn’t run out and the jar of oil didn’t fail, according to the LORD’s word, which he spoke by Elijah.

New Testament

James 2:14-26

14 What good is it, my brothers, if a man says he has faith, but has no works? Can faith save him?

15 And if a brother or sister is naked and in lack of daily food,

16 and one of you tells them, “Go in peace. Be warmed and filled;” yet you didn’t give them the things the body needs, what good is it?

17 Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead in itself.

18 Yes, a man will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without works, and I will show you my faith by my works.

19 You believe that God is one. You do well. The demons also believe—and shudder.

20 But do you want to know, vain man, that faith apart from works is dead?

21 Wasn’t Abraham our father justified by works, in that he offered up Isaac his son on the altar?

22 You see that faith worked with his works, and by works faith was perfected.

23 So the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him as righteousness,” and he was called the friend of God.

24 You see then that by works a man is justified, and not only by faith.

25 In the same way, wasn’t Rahab the prostitute also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way?

26 For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, even so faith apart from works is dead.

Thought for the Day

The widow of Zarephath has almost nothing left: a handful of flour, a little oil, the thin plan of one last meal. And yet the story does not make her a spectacle. God’s provision arrives through an ordinary kitchen, through bread made in scarcity, through courage that shares when sharing feels impossible.

James is just as unsentimental. He asks what good it is to speak blessings over a brother or sister without giving what is needed. Faith that lives only in words has lost its pulse. Living faith takes the shape of bread and clothing, of help offered in time.

In the life of a displaced person, provision often comes through a chain of small mercies: a meal, a lift, a room, an interpreter, a letter, a patient explanation. It is rarely dramatic. It is simply faithful. Often it is received through strangers who choose not to look away.

So pray for provision that is practical and dignifying. Pray for churches and charities that can keep going. And pray for yourself: that your compassion would not stay in the throat. Ask for the grace to give without pride, and to receive without shame, as members of one household under the Lord who multiplies what is offered.

Prayer Points

Respond
  • Lord, provide daily bread for displaced families: food, warmth, stable housing, and safety.
  • Strengthen local churches, charities, and volunteers with stamina, joy, and wise boundaries.
  • Give generosity without show: quiet giving, honest speech, and help that preserves dignity.

  • Guide decision-makers to fund and support what truly sustains life, not only what looks impressive.
  • Teach me to offer mercy in time, not merely in theory, trusting you with what I cannot supply.
